Safety Tips

Bulldog Tips for Home Safety and Security*

In addition to having an effective Bulldog Security System, here are some helpful tips to keep your home and family safe from burglary, intrusion, and fire.

  • Never open the door before you know who is there.
  • If you will be leaving your residence for a period of time, create the illusion that someone is home. Leave a TV or stereo on. Put various interior lights on a timer. Use exterior lighting and motion detectors that make it difficult for a burglar to conceal himself.
  • If you are leaving town for a few days, adjust your telephone ring to its lowest volume setting so as not to tip off a burglar that no one is home. Request that a neighbor or friend pick up your newspaper and mail. Do not cancel mail/newspaper delivery; that information may get into the wrong hands.
  • Let trusted neighbors know if you are going out of town so they can keep a watchful eye on your home. Always provide them with your contact info for emergencies.
  • Make sure your exterior doors have effective and sturdy locks.  Consider installing 1-inch deadbolt locks on all exterior doors and your garage door leading inside the home.
  • Never leave extra door keys under obvious areas like doormats, plant containers, etc. Thieves will find them. Give a set to a neighbor or nearby family member you trust.
  • Add extra break-in protection to your sliding patio doors by setting a pipe or metal bar in the middle bottom track.
  • Keep garage doors shut at all times. Never pull away without making sure your garage doors close. Often, garage-sensing devises detect an object in the pathway and doors reverse to open.
  • Remove “break-in” objects from around your house. This may include rocks and gardening tools.
  • Don't advertise the valuable items in your home. Keep drapes and blinds shut - especially in rooms where there is expensive artwork, valuables or electronic equipment.
  • Always store cash, jewelry and other valuables in a safe or safety deposit box instead of leaving them in drawers or visible areas.
  • After purchasing electronic equipment, jewelry or other expensive items, dispose of all packaging in black garbage bags. No need to share your good fortune with others roaming the neighborhood.
  • Please do not leave notes on the door for service people or family members. This kind of information tells a burglar that you are not home.

Bulldog Tips for Home Fire Safety*

  • Let Bulldog assess your fire protection needs.
  • Always have working smoke alarms on every level of your home. Test them monthly to make sure they operate. Put in new batteries once a year.
  • Make a fire escape plan for your family. Identify two escape exits. Establish a meeting spot outside the home. Explain to your children and try to have a family fire drill practice once or more a year.
  • Be sure your street address can be clearly identified from the street so firefighters can quickly locate your home in the event of an emergency
  • Never leave your irons, stovetops, ovens or outdoor grills unattended while they are in use. Always double-check they have been turned off when they are no longer needed.
  • When renovating your home, make sure construction and roofing materials are fire resistant.
  • Never let a lit candle burn unattended.
  • Always douse cigarette and cigar butts with water before putting them in a trash container. Better yet, make your home a no-smoking area.
  • Keep firewood, gas lawn mowers and other combustibles away from your home.
